Introductory essay
The juvenile calender is a collection of twelve engravings, each consisting of a quatrain accompanying a coloured image, each page representing a single month. Of these, the most appealing are 'May', depicting children participating in some kind of spring rite, each child apparently dressed up as the 'green man', and 'November', showing the burning of the Guy on Bonfire Night. Other pages show children skating, snow-balling and birds' nesting, and celebrating April Fool's Day, Christmas and the harvest home.
