The nursery rhyme 'Jack and Jill' first started to appear in print in the second half of the eighteenth century. This version has the full complement of fifteen stanzas, with the animadversions of Old Dame Gill on Jack and Gill's antics, which had become standard by the early nineteenth century. It probably dates from the middle of the nineteenth century, judging simply by its appearance. The crude wood-cuts might be said to recall an earlier age, but they may well have been re-used from an earlier publication, or have been kept deliberately simple so as to keep the production costs down.
