Introductory essay
The nursery rhymes included here are a miscellaneous group. Some are familiar today: 'Bah, bah, black sheep' (here given as 'Bah, bah, black ram': p.13) and 'See-saw Margery Daw' (though here coupled to a less family verse: p.14). Others are more obscure, such as the two which take the shooting of birds as their theme (pp.4-5) or 'O! My chicken, my chicken', a song to accompany the dandling of a child upon a mother's knee (p.1). There is even a cautionary tale cast into verse form: the story of 'Little General Monk' (a monkey in the illustration) who dies when his clothes catch fire due to his playing on the hearth (p.9). The picture of two lovers on the outside front cover only serves to muddle still further the question of what kind of audience this kind of book was intended for.
